Chai Zushun, associate professor of Shanghai Theater Academy, member of National Artists Association and Shanghai Artists Association, was born in Hangzhou in 1935 and graduated from Shanghai Fine Arts School in 1956. He studied painting under the guidance of famous artists such as Liu Haisu, Chen Dayu, Guan Liang and concentrated in teaching and creating after graduated.

In his early years, Chai Zushun worked in countryside and factory and led his students traveling to mountains, rivers and sacred places of Chinese revolution to draw hundreds of sketches. Chai Zushun has a solid foundation of sketch and painting, and later published several books on fine arts study.

Chai Zushun boasts a solid foundation of oil painting and combines the western skills of color, perspective, light and shade with Chinese traditional shape creating skill. In 1970, as the leader of Shanghai Oil Painting Creating Team, Chai was in charge of creating the famous oil painting Chairman Mao Visits Iron and Steel Factory. However, the painting, with meticulous care of Chai, brought a nightmare to his life, due to which, he was criticized during Culture Revolution, and was ordered living and working in the factory, until Prime Minister Zhou Enlai redressed for him. Then, this artworkwas published by Shanghai People¡¯s Fine Arts Publishing House as a poster, and showed in the movie Hottest Period, which declared his innocence.

After those rough experiences, Chai Zushun left away from history theme and portrait. Since 1980s, Chai concentrated in beasts painting, especially dragon and tiger. At the end of 20th century, affected by western painting masters, such as Zhao Wuji, Zhu Dequn and Jackson Pollock, Chai changing his style from representationalism to abstract art. Chai innovated his painting style when he was over seventy years old. Inward Image Painting is a result after he studied from global contemporary arts essence and formed his fresh new style.

As a clinging artist, Chai never changes his idealism pursuit whatever experience he. As a disabled painter, Chai never relax on arts and he explored from oil painting to Chinese painting and finally to his Inward Image Paintings, Chai has fully presented us his mature, innovative and creative artistic connotation and attainment.
