¡¡¡¡The bronze sculpture¡°The Flying of China¡±was one of the exhibits
of¡°Shanghai International Biennial Urban Sculpture Exhibition 2005¡±which opened
on Nov. 19th 2005, and has drawn much attention from the media. Today, there is
finally an answer to the sculpture¡¯destiny: the Korean sculptor Mr. Kim Seon-Gu
and Beijing JinDu Art Center, the sculptor¡¯s agency company, have made decision
to donate the sculpture to the SHCDF. on March 21,2006,the donation ceremony was
held in the WenXin United Press Tower.
¡¡¡¡Mr. Kim Seon-Gu has won a great number of important sculpture awards,
including¡°Special Prize¡±awarded at Korea Fine Art Grand Exhibition;¡°Grand
Prix¡±awarded at The Korea Fine Art Association Contest and¡°Grand Prix¡±awarded at
International Horse Sculpture Contest, etc. Kim Seo-Gu¡¯s sculpture is hailed as
the¡°the Anthem of Hero in the era of science and technology¡±within Korea,
especially for his figure sculptures that exhibits the modern lives¡¯temperaments
and dignity showing full of motion and intensity.¡°The Flying of China¡±is a
masterpiece created according to Liu Xiang¡¯s great performance on hurdle race
and is specially made for Shanghai and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
¡¡¡¡Being a Korean artist, Kim greatly appreciates and is deeply attached to
Chinese culture and art, whose works are abundant of Chinese spirits and
features. When explaining his motivation and idea of creating¡°The Flying of
China¡±, Kim said,¡°Liu Xiang symbolizes China¡¯s Bounding Economy. Liu¡¯s wining of
the Olympic gold medal, glorifies not only Chinese people but all the Asian as
well. I created the sculpture when taking Liu as Chinese national hero and
embodying Chinese national characteristics¡±. As the 2008 Olympics coming up, Kim
perceived Liu as China¡¯s future. The Korean artist wished to exhibit, using his
own artistic style, his idea of China and Chinese people to Korea and the entire
world.
¡¡¡¡The donation of the¡°The Flying of China¡±represents Kim¡¯s identification and
trust in Shanghai public-benefit culture undertaking and the SHCDF. Meanwhile,
this is also the result that the growing social public credit of the SHCDF has
made great influences to the sculptor. With the constant improvement of the
operation mechanism, the SHCDF has obtained up to 55 artworks including
sculptures and paintings donated by organizations and individuals from China,
the United States, France, Romania, etc., valued about 10 million RMB. The

¡¡¡¡Recall the Giant, Donate the¡°Afterthought¡±
¡¡¡¡In this autumn, Ba Jin, the master in Chinese literature, passed away,
lefting endless sorrow and grief. In honor of the great litterateur, Yan Youren,
the famous sculptor, created specific bronze sculpture called¡°Afterthought,
Century Conscience¨CBa Jin¡±, which has been molded 3 pieces. The first piece was
donated to Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation and displayed at Shanghai
Library. The second was donated to the Organizing Committee of Shanghai
International Biannual Urban Sculpture Exhibition and displayed at the former
residence of Ba Jin.While the last one was kept by the artist himself. This
sculpture has just won the Art Prize of the Shanghai Art Exhibition 2005.
¡¡¡¡When talking about the purpose of creation, the artist is still full of
emotion. Someone has ever mentioned:¡°Ba Jin was the man who had the most painful
life in contemporary China,¡everyone¡¯s life is easy and free except his. Because
he kept on concentrating in his confession word by word.¡±Since 1978, the year
after the Cultural Revolution, he spent 3 years on writing the¡¶Record of Random
Thinking¡·,which contends more than 400 thousands words and 150 articles; and
another 8 years on¡¶Record of Rethinking¡·to continue his independent meditation.
¡¡¡¡To express the understanding, honor and memory of all who are keen on the
literature to Ba Jin, Yan Youren decided to use the art form of sculpture to
build the everlasting art image of Bajin in the shape of picking up the pen. In
the structure of the sculpture, with his dignified appearance, his lifting hand,
his drooping pen, Ba Jin feels like to write down all that he has thought
immediately after his meditation. The character and the luster of the bronze
perfectly annotate the theme of the sculpture. Ba Jin is such an honest,
sincere, unswerving and steadfast giant.
¡¡¡¡In the course of creating the sculpture, the spirit of Ba Jin brought the
artist to deep inside of the heart length by length. When completing the
sculpture, Yan also experienced a purification of soul. Although Ba Jin has
passed away, his spirit of wisdom was left . As Ba Jin belongs to people, the
sculptures are donated to the public organizations, which could be admired by
more citizens. If Ba Jin could realize it in the paradise, he might be
gratified.
